GIS for Beginners #1: QGIS 3 Orientation. +Free 111p eBook

QGIS 3 Project Files: Recreate screen environments from days, months, or even years ago. Thematic map: creation of a shaded GIS map.
Thematic map color scheme: It is easy to compare cards that have been shaded using the same color scheme. It also helps your cards tell their story. I show you how to choose a color scheme that works for your entire GIS mapping project.

Create a chronological thematic map (shaded). How to Validate Geospatial Data: Why Validating GIS Mapping is Important and How to Go About It. Understand the relationship between a GIS map and the table behind it. Understanding the geospatial concept: why maps have limits. Why GIS Maps Are Rich Geospatial Databases. What is the map overlay? What are the four GIS cartographic objects. Map Interpretation: Understand that shapes, colors, and other visual cues in GIS maps and aerial photos can be substitutes for socio-economic and environmental information.

Generic GIS mapping functionality: how to open, navigate and interpret GIS maps and aerial photos, and change their appearance on screen with the basics of geospatial analysis.

QGIS thematic map creation: create your first shaded thematic map. I show you an easy way to find a color scheme for any thematic map. I also explain why it may be important to generalize geospatial data for certain audiences.

QGIS Time Series Creating Thematic Maps: I show you a simple technique that even QGIS newbies can use to demonstrate the “change” of a map theme over time. We will compare the land use maps interpreted 28 years apart.

Shapes and colors in GIS mapping and GIS aerial photos can be surrogates for socio-economic and environmental information: why visual clues such as block size, shape of streams and even state vegetation reveals all kinds of valuable information. These techniques are not even on the radar of many GIS technicians.

Validating Geospatial Data: Why Validating GIS Mapping is Important and How to Go About It.

Conceptually understanding GIS: why maps have limits. Why GIS maps are rich databases too. What is the map overlay? What are the four GIS cartographic objects.

Understand the relationship between GIS mapping and the tables that underpin it.

Core Spatial Data Analysis: Introductory GIS with R and QGIS

Do you find GIS and spatial data books and manuals too vague, expensive, and impractical and looking for a course that gets you started, teaches you all the concepts, and gets you started on a real project? Or maybe you want to save time and learn how to automate some of the more common GIS tasks? In this course, real spatial data from Tam Dao National Park in Vietnam will be used to give hands-on experience of working with real spatial data and understand what kind of questions spatial data can help us answer. The motivation behind the course is to make sure that you can practice spatial data analysis today. Start analyzing spatial data for your own projects, regardless of your skill level, and IMPRINT your potential employers with a real-life example of your spatial data analysis capabilities.

This is a basic course in spatial data analysis, that is, we will focus on learning the most important and widely encountered spatial data analysis tasks in R and QGIS. This is a hands-on, hands-on course, that is, we will spend some time dealing with some of the theoretical concepts related to the analysis of spatial data. However, the majority of the course will focus on working with spatial data from Tam Dao National Park, Vietnam. After each video, you will learn a new concept or technique that you can apply to your own projects.

You will have greater clarity of spatial database concepts and data types. Perform hands-on spatial data analysis tasks in freely available software. Find out what kind of questions spatial analysis answers and where to get free spatial data. Analyze spatial data using both R and QGIS. Process raster and vector data in R and QGIS. Show your skills and gain experience by working on a spatial data analysis project related to real life conservation. Start analyzing spatial data from your own projects using two powerful free tools. You will have a copy of all data and R scripts used in the course will be provided to students for reference and to use in their own analysis. You will also have a lot of practical tips and advice will be provided with the code to avoid problems.

An introduction to GIS and QGIS 3

This geographic information systems course is a comprehensive introduction to GIS and QGIS. Starting at the beginner level, we’ll cover basic terminology and conventions, some of the fundamentals of GIS, an overview of what QGIS is, and then we’ll start with hands-on experience using QGIS. All sample data is original and provided for you.

The course will take around 2 hours, but playing around with the software is a great way to learn, so don’t worry if it takes longer. The course is structured with a mixture of lectures, quizzes and we will end with a practical exercise to put into practice all the knowledge you have acquired. The practicality is crucial and definitely try new things with the software. To do is to learn! You should take this course if you need to quickly learn QGIS basics and want to try QGIS before taking other courses. More advanced courses will be available soon.

Using Open Source Tools to Create an Enterprise GIS

[ufwp id=”649690″]

Do you want to learn how to build an enterprise GIS from scratch using free and open source software for GIS (FOSS4g)? In response to the high cost and complexity of implementing an enterprise GIS, I have created this easy-to-follow, hands-on training course for students to create a multi-user enterprise GIS from zero using Postgres, PostGIS (free) and Quantum. GIS (free). As a bonus, this training will show how you can add other GIS products (i.e. commercial GIS software) to the business stack as GIS customers.

In this course, you will create an enterprise GIS that includes vector and raster data for a medium-sized municipality. You will learn how to add users, each with different permissions to access and modify data, and also how to use PostGRES to control all aspects of accessing, presenting and editing the database. You’ll even perform simultaneous multi-user edits on the same GIS layer and see how a true enterprise GIS can handle multiple users at once.

As a bonus, you’ll see how you can access all of the GIS tools from outside the software using python to create a tabletop GIS application that you might find on a kiosk. And finally, I will show you an example of how the same data in the enterprise can be displayed simultaneously on the internet using the FOSS4g software.
