Foundation to Oracle Database in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
We will start with the basics such as: What is cloud computing, what are the types of cloud: public / private / hybrid? What is the meaning of important acronyms like IaaS / PaaS / SaaS.
A good understanding will be given on Oracle Cloud, its subscription models, demos will be done to show registration and connection to Oracle Cloud.
Then the discussion will move to the OCI (Second Generation Cloud) and take a deep dive into the architecture of OCI. We will look at important concepts such as: What are compartments / VCNs / availability domains / forms and OCPu. Some demos for the creation of Compartments / VCNs will be made.
The next step would be to understand database cloud services such as: ODCS / Exadata Service / Exadata Cloud @ Customer. After that we will perform demos: Provisioning Database in OCI & OCI-Classic
The last milestone would be related to understanding ssh connectivity, there will be demos showing how you create public / private keys on Unix and Windows, a demo showing ssh connectivity from Windows server and Unix server will be done. Demonstrate how to log in as an administrator / root user on Oracle Cloud Machines. At the end, we will challenge ourselves and connect the AWS EC-2 machine in the Amazon cloud to Oracle Database in Oracle Cloud. The last demo will be on Sql Developer connectivity using SSH tunnels where listen port 1521 was blocked.
Oracle Database Migration Methods :On-Prem to Oracle Cloud
With the advent of cloud computing, the biggest challenge facing DBAs and solution architects is how to migrate Oracle On-Prem databases to the cloud. This course teaches you all of the different strategies and methods you can use to migrate from On-Prem to Oracle Cloud (OCI), as well as a method to migrate from AWS RDS to OCI.
Please note that the same policies can be used if you want to migrate your Oracle database to IaaS based cloud services in AWS EC2 / Azure / OCI and GCP.
We will start our migration journey with a discussion of: the factors that help you choose your migration strategy, from there we will discuss two main concepts that drive a migration strategy and these are the Endianness & Database character sets . As the biggest bottleneck in any database migration exercise is Nework Bandwidth, so we are going to discuss the concept of Oracle Data Transfer Appliance.
In the next module we are going to create our onsite environment using Vagrant and VirtualBox, there will be a deep dive session in Vagrant if you are new to this technology as we will install, configure Vagrant and then provision our virtual machine (VM) using Vagrant and show how this whole process is automated. This would be followed by installing Oracle 18c XE, creating a database with sample schemas, and this will act as our on-premises Oracle database environment.
Once our On-Prem environment is set up, we will proceed on our journey to Oracle Cloud and introduce you to 2 important concepts in OCI which are Compartments and VCNs (Virtual Cloud Network), then we will provide a VM based DbaaS instance in OCI. I will teach you the method to configure SSH connectivity between the on-premises machine and the OCI DB system.
From the next module, we will delve into the different types of Oracle database migration methods that are available to us. The whole discussion will be divided into three parts: concept discussion, method workflow, end-to-end demonstration of the migration method. Please note that the commands used in the demos are also provided in the Resources section. The methods that will be taught are:
• Conventional export / import of Data Pump
• Data Pump transportable logical disk space
• Fully transportable data pump
• RMAN CONVERT transportable table space with Data Pump
• RMAN multiplatform transportable PDB
• RMAN multiplatform transportable PDB (inconsistent backups)
• RMAN restore using Oracle Cloud Backup module
• Disconnect / Connect (CDB)
• SQL Developer to migrate the selected objects
As with all courses in the last module, we will try to challenge ourselves and the challenge will be to migrate the Oracle database running in AWS RDS to Oracle Cloud and to do this we will use AWS DMS (Data Migration Service).
