We will download and install SQL Server Developer for free, which gives you all the features of the Enterprise edition at full cost (but we cannot use it for commercial purposes). We will start by downloading a demo database and learning how to back up and restore that database, along with the appropriate recovery models for other databases, so that you can offer recovery at any given time.
We will manage connections and server roles, so you can control who has access to what data, implement and maintain indexes, so you can speed up searches and import and export data. We will look at SQL Server Agent management, so that you can automate routine tasks and also be alerted to issues, we will manage and configure databases and look at compression, which makes it easier to administer large databases. . And much more.
The course will last around 10 hours, but it will allow you to familiarize yourself with the tasks of database administration, which will give you hands-on experience.
The course slowly increases in difficulty, so you are going to manually back up a database, but later on we will use SQL Server Agent to automate this. In this Part 1 course, we will only perform activities that require a single computer, instead of multiple servers or virtualization.
The class is quite relaxed – there will be a few ‘wrong turns’, so you can see what problems might arise, but each lesson works towards an end goal at a relatively slow pace, so you can easily follow along on your own computer. I’m assuming you know how to use a computer including installing programs, but the actual DBA will be at a basic level, and I’ll walk through each component as we go.
No knowledge of T-SQL is required, as I will demonstrate everything I can through the graphical user interface (GUI) as well as T-SQL. However, if you are going to take the official Microsoft exam, knowledge equivalent to my first two courses in 70-461 T-SQL is essential.
