Genetics and Next Generation Sequencing for Bioinformatics

This course is a starting point in NGS. It covers the prerequisites of biology and quality control. Future courses will cover data analysis in more detail.
Project:
This course includes a step-by-step guided project.
This project will assess the quality of raw data from an Illumina sequencer.
You will then use FastQC and Trimmomatic to improve the quality of this data.
Preconditions:
Secondary 10 biology and chemistry
Basic statistics such as interpreting graphs, histograms and whisker plots
You have to take advantage of biology

Learn Bioinformatics in 6 Days
This is a self-paced course that fits your own busy daily schedules. At your own pace, you have the freedom to complete each topic according to your own available time before moving on to the next chapter without rushing. Basically, I will teach you 6 fundamental subjects in bioinformatics. Just to let you know, I don’t intend to cover a basic programming course here. Udemy has many great programming courses that can be applied in a bioinformatics setting. So please at least equip yourself with Python, Perl, PHP, Java, SQL and R programming. It will really help you take off faster as a bioinformatician in the near future. In 6 days, you will learn through video conferences and tutorials on:
Day 1 – Introduction to bioinformatics
We will begin this course with a brief definition of bioinformatics – what exactly it is and the importance of this field in the scientific world. In addition, I will share with you the story of the birth of bioinformatics – the reason it was invented.
Day 2 – Bioinformatics databases
One of the reasons bioinformatics exists is due to the increased amount of biological data sets. These are huge scientific research results that must be managed. In this chapter, you will first learn how data is stored and handled. Next, I will begin to introduce you to nucleotide databases. Bioinformatics is all about managing data and delivering scientific knowledge. In this chapter, we will also focus on protein databases. These two types of databases complement each other and are both important for your studies. An example database we’ll cover here is UniProt.
Day 3 – Alignment of sequences
This is one of my favorite chapters. Have you ever wondered how two sequences are compared using two different sequence alignment algorithms? Consider aligning 100 DNA sequences at a time – is there a way to perform multiple sequence alignment? In this chapter, I’ll teach you how to perform global and local sequence alignments – these are the basic concepts of scoring matrices. Let’s get serious with bioinformatics from now on!
Day 4 – BLAST programs
Yeah! Also my favorite! I’m going to teach you how to perform local sequence alignment using a bioinformatics tool known as BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool). We will review BLAST nucleotide and protein sequence programs and learn how to read and interpret BLAST results in detail.
Day 5 – Molecular phylogenetics
Let’s get right to the point. You are unique and unique! If you’re a huge fan of X-Men and other Hollywood sci-fi movies about aliens, superhumans, men with extraordinary powers, or even our diversity, now is the time to pay attention to this module. I will explain to you how species are identified and classified using genetic data. To do this, we will also study several types of phylogenic analysis algorithms and build a tree of life from a specific set of sequences. Don’t skip this session!
Day 6 – Genome analysis
In this module, you will discover a genome. We will take a close look at structural and comparative genomics. The detailed parts start with sequencing technologies and are followed by genome assembly and annotation.
Bioinformatics with Python
Did you know that the human genomic sequence, if printed in a normal text font, would stretch 5000 km, which is the distance from London to Montreal, Los Angeles to Panama, Accra to Cape Town, from Tokyo to Calcutta.
This same sequence would fill approximately 3,000 books the size of a normal book.
Understanding and analyzing this sequence is clearly going to be a huge task.
