Corporate Finance 101: Financial Statement Analysis & Ratios

This is a tour with zoom in, zoom out and connect points of financial statement analysis

Let’s analyze this

“Connect the Dots”: Financial statement analysis gets a bad rap because it is difficult to relate the bulk of financial statements to the business as a whole. This course makes a serious effort to do just that.
“Zoom in”: Getting the details is very important in corporate finance – a small typo or minor misunderstanding can cost a business dearly. This course gets the details where they matter.
“Zoom out”: Details are important, but not always. You probably don’t care about the details of accounting for contingent liabilities if you don’t know what accounts payable are. This course knows when to take the big picture.
What is covered:

Introduction of corporate finance: partnerships, sole proprietorships and society
The agency problem: how auditors, the board of directors and the financial market regulator play a role
Financial statements: balance sheet, income statement, statement of comprehensive income and statement of cash flows in exactly the right level of detail
Ratios: five important types of ratios: liquidity ratios, leverage ratios, turnover ratios, profitability ratios and valuation ratios
Dupont’s identity: return on equity can be broken down into 3 elements: profits, thinness of assets and leverage.
External Financing Required (EFN) and Sustainable Growth Rate: How fast can a business grow if it chooses to forgo external financing? Every startup should know that, really.
Common Accounting Shenanigans: The Financial Statement Cheaters Playbook has been studied by auditors and regulators – learn from history so you don’t have to repeat it.
Case studies:

Understand a company entirely from its investor statements

Facebook: Growing fast and profitably, it’s the dream title right now.
LinkedIn: versatile, but struggles to break through – the jury seems to be on LinkedIn
Twitter: Red bleeding and slowing growth – Twitter appears to be in trouble.

You will learn:
Interpret financial statements – balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows
Analyze SEC-filed documents such as 10K and 10Q to fully understand the business model of any company from its investor filings
Calculate ratios in all major categories: liquidity, leverage, turnover, profitability and valuation
Apply Dupont identity to see if a company’s stock returns are driven by operational effectiveness, asset efficiency, or leverage
Calculate the sustainable growth rate at which a company can develop without external financing
