OpenFOAM is an open-source CFD software toolkit that supports the most common operating systems. It is designed to enable easy, yet powerful, applications for fluid flow simulations in complex geometries. OpenFOAM allows CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations to be accomplished by both scientists and engineers. Technically, OpenFOAM is a set of software libraries to facilitate the development of solvers, applications, and postprocessing tools for arbitrary CFD, scientific or technical problems.

The Complete Introduction to OpenFOAM

Computer modeling is already at the heart of modern engineering and industry, with the demand for skilled professionals increasing steadily over time. Unfortunately, software for these roles often costs tens of thousands of dollars to license and / or is extremely complicated to learn and practice. Being open source and used in many businesses operating today, OpenFOAM is a great way to learn these methods and dramatically improve your ability to solve engineering problems. Although structured in such a way that it is very flexible and ideal for creating your own projects, learning OpenFOAM without help can be a daunting prospect.

The purpose of this course is to give a simple and straightforward introduction to OpenFOAM covering common bugs and errors so that you can easily go through the steep initial learning curve at your own pace. While the lessons learned here can be applied to any OpenFOAM solver (of which there is a significant range), the emphasis is on solid mechanics as the implementation is generally much simpler than more common applications. (high speed flow, etc.) Moreover, as solid mechanics is necessary for most engineering disciplines even if it is not the main interest of this discipline (aerodynamics is centered on the interaction between solid objects and fluid flows for example), solid mechanics is an excellent basic skill to have and a theoretical precursor need for a good understanding of fluid dynamics in all its forms.

You will learn:

Understand the basic requirements of OpenFOAM computer modeling
Be able to take any tutorial file into OpenFOAM, set up the case for yourself, and use any geometries and boundaries you want. While we can’t cover the majority of solvers, you should be able to explore particular solvers on your own and learn on your own.
Create meshes and configure limits / initial conditions compatible with OpenFOAM
Be able to use the FOAM-Extend solid mechanics solver library.
Understand the fundamentals of linear elasticity, thermal conduction, friction and constant / time dependent plasticity for use in aerospace, mechanical, and industrial engineering applications.

This is one of the best OpenFOAM courses in 2022.

The results are there – OpenFOAM can solve any major CFD industry problem that established competitors can solve. The power to design anything from jets and engines to pipes and heat exchangers is just a download away. Unfortunately, as I learned the first time I used it, OpenFOAM has a very steep learning curve. Having learned the basics many years ago, I quickly realized how complicated CFD can get. Even though I knew how to set up a case and use blockMesh with simple solvers, it wasn’t always clear how to solve realistic problems with knowledge of the basics. The main difficulties were:

– Turbulence: All really interesting streams have included some aspect of this and it’s often more art than science!

– Mesh: Simple meshes cannot account for combat aircraft bodies or turbine blades, I knew there had to be a better solution.

– Mesh Behavior and Convergence: with no solutions to compare with I never knew if I could trust my results.

I did this class with my young self in mind. It is these things, among other tips and tricks, that have given me the most difficulty in practicing and require the most experience / correct techniques to do well. The purpose of this course, at its end, is to show you how to do this. There are many specialist topics that we cannot cover and learning CFD by industry standards (where salaries over $ 100,000 per year are not unusual) could easily cover a PhD and many years of experience. . Even so, there are a few soft skills that you will need over and over again when having practical CFD issues. If you can manage to master them, in my experience you can pick up much of the rest as you go and quickly acquire the skills that are already propelling modern engineering into the future.

The Finite Volume Method in Computational Fluid Dynamics: An Advanced Introduction with OpenFOAM® and Matlab

This manual explores the theoretical foundations of the finite volume method (FVM) and its applications in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Readers will experience an in-depth explanation of the numerical values and FVM algorithms used for the simulation of compressible and incompressible fluid flows, as well as a detailed review of the components required for the development of a pressure-based unstructured CFD solver. Two particular CFD codes are explored. The first is uFVM, a finite volume, unstructured, three-dimensional academic CFD code implemented in Matlab. The second is OpenFOAM®, an open source framework used in the development of a range of CFD programs for simulating flow problems on an industrial scale. With more than 220 figures, numerous examples, and more than a hundred exercises in FVM numbers, programming, and applications, this manual is suitable for use in an introductory FVM course in an advanced course. in digital and as a reference for CFD programmers and researchers.
